What Reviewers Praise and Criticize

Recent reviewers praise the guides, the photos and the crossing itself. Laura (Sep 2026) took an evening start: “We booked the 7.30pm and it was amazing seeing the city lit up and driving through the Shibuya crossing at night.” The number of crossings varies by reviewer. Micheal (Aug 2026) enjoyed “going through shibuya 4 times from all different sides”, while Aiaz (Jul 2026) describes “two passes through the iconic Shibuya Crossing”.

The criticism is about speed and small extras. Furkan (Sep 2026) wrote “I hoped to drive faster but it was not possible due to traffic”, and reported that “You have to pay extra for insurance (1'000 JPY per person)”. Insurance is not in the listing's includes line, so budget for it. The same reviewer notes the costumes are the shop's own: “no Mario, but Pikachu available”.

“It was a great experience to drive in Tokyo at night! The instructions of the staff were very clear and understandable. Costumes are provided there (no Mario, but Pikachu available). You have to pay extra for insurance (1'000 JPY per person). It was a bit expensive but I think it was worth it. However, I hoped to drive faster but it was not possible due to traffic.”

Street Kart Shibuya FAQ

It starts at the operator's shop in Shibuya, a semi-underground garage you enter from the street. Look for an outside staircase on the side of the building, a neon logo on the wall outside and wall-to-wall mirrors inside the garage. A hot-pot restaurant is on the second floor of the same building. The route ends back at the garage.

The price includes the kart and gasoline, an English-speaking guide, a costume, goggles, a raincoat on rainy days and the photos your guide takes, handed over at the end. An action camera and a head or chest mount are optional rentals, and a micro-SD card is an optional purchase. One reviewer (Sep 2026) reports paying ¥1,000 extra per person for insurance.

Yes, but only up to 7 days before the start for a full refund. That is stricter than most kart tours in Tokyo, which allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. On our check for 15 Oct 2026 the free-cancellation deadline shown was 8 Oct. If your dates may change, a tour with a 24-hour window is the safer booking.

You need your physical home driver's license, your passport and a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP in booklet form, all originals. The IDP must be issued by the country that issued your license and can't be obtained online while traveling. Licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium and Monaco need a JAF Japanese translation instead. Licenses from countries such as China, Indonesia, Mexico, Qatar and Saudi Arabia can't be used.

Anyone under 18 can't drive, and the listing marks the tour as unsuitable for pregnant women, people with mobility impairments, wheelchair users, people with back problems and hearing-impaired people. The listing doesn't state a height or weight limit. None of the listings we checked sells a passenger seat, so a younger family member would need the closed track, which takes drivers from age 6.

The listing promises “1 hour of driving,” so the hour is time at the wheel. The listing also promises a safety briefing but doesn't say whether it falls inside the hour. Traffic sets the pace on public roads: one reviewer (Sep 2026) hoped to drive faster but couldn't because of traffic.

¥16,500 (≈$105) is the lowest “from” price the listing advertises; ¥18,500 (≈$118) is what checkout showed for 1 adult on 15 Oct 2026, checked on 29 Sep 2026. The gap on that date was ¥2,000. Prices change by date, so check your own day in the calendar before you pay.

Wear closed, flat shoes: slippers and high-heeled shoes are not allowed, and neither are cellphones, alcohol or drugs. The shop provides the costume, goggles and a raincoat, so you don't need to bring your own gear. Bring your three documents as originals, because without them you won't drive.
