Where to Start: Three Guides in Order
Read three guides before you compare tours: documents first, then price, then the month. The documents decide whether you drive at all — the counter checks your home license, your passport and a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP booklet as originals, and drivers from six countries bring a ¥6,000 JAF translation instead. Price and season only matter once that is settled.
- 1License and IDP — the three originals and the six JAF countries.
- 2Price — ¥7,000–¥21,000 per person on 15 October 2026, median ¥14,500, and why checkout can beat the “from”.
- 3When to go — November or late March to May, with a spare day in September and October.
Check your documents before anything else.
License guideChoosing a Route, an Hour and a City
Once the documents are fine, the choice is mostly about what you want to see. Shibuya has 12 of the 25 listings and the Scramble Crossing; Tokyo Bay has 4, including the one route that advertises crossing Rainbow Bridge. The night guide shows where the hour changes the price — ¥12,000 in the morning against ¥26,000 in the evening on one Tokyo Tower route — and the worth-it guide sums up 223 recent reviews.

Shibuya vs Tokyo BayKids, the Track and Mario Kart
Three questions come up often enough to have their own guide. Children cannot drive or ride on any street tour, so families end up at New Tokyo Circuit in Chiba, about 60 minutes from central Tokyo, where the junior kart takes drivers from 6. The same circuit is the only option without a road license. And “Mario Kart” is the name travelers still use for tours that lost the Nintendo costumes after the 2020 ruling.

Racing trackHow These Guides Are Checked
Every number in these guides comes from a source you can check, with its date. Prices are what GetYourGuide's checkout showed for one adult on 15 October 2026, read on 29 September 2026; ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide's on the same day. Listing details — meeting points, what is included, age, height and weight limits — were re-read on 30 September 2026.
Outside GetYourGuide, the license guide follows the Japan Automobile Federation for the six countries that use a JAF translation, and the season guide uses the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991–2020 climate normals for Tokyo. We did not ride the tours. When a listing contradicts itself — a 30-minute header on a tour that sells one hour, for example — the guide says so instead of quietly picking one.
