Is Mario Kart Better in Tokyo or Osaka — The Short Answer

Tokyo is the better city for what people call Mario Kart if you want to choose the route, the length and the hour; Osaka is a good alternative if Osaka is where you are. We compare all 25 Tokyo listings on GetYourGuide in depth. For Osaka we checked the main listings and one operator site on 30 September 2026, and we report only what they state.

The format is the same in both cities: a street-legal kart you drive yourself on public roads, behind a guide, often in a costume. The company that started it was sued by Nintendo, and after the Supreme Court dismissed its final appeal on 25 December 2020 it has operated as Street Kart. Street Kart sells tours from shops in Tokyo and an Osaka tour on GetYourGuide.

Street kart

Prices are hard to compare like for like, because we took a dated price snapshot only for Tokyo. In Tokyo, a reviewed hour starts at ¥9,000 (≈$57) and the most-reviewed tour cost ¥18,500 on 15 October. In Osaka, the operator JAPANKART lists a 90-minute Osaka Castle tour at ¥10,000 on its own site; check the yen price for your date on any Osaka listing before you book.

What an Osaka Street Kart Route Covers

The Osaka routes we found center on the Minami area in the south of the city. Street Kart’s Osaka tour on GetYourGuide, rated 4.9 from 263 reviews when we checked, covers America-Mura, Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori and Namba. Its listing offers free cancellation up to 7 days before, the same window as three of the four Street Kart listings in Tokyo.

Other operators reach further. Akiba Kart’s Nipponbashi shop sells 1-hour and 90-minute experiences through Namba and Dotonbori, with Osaka Castle on some packages, according to its Klook listing. JAPANKART lists a 90-minute tour past Tsutenkaku Tower and Osaka Castle on its own site. We have not compared these listings in depth, so treat them as a starting point.

What Tokyo Gives You to Choose From

Tokyo’s advantage is range. You can pick the Scramble Crossing on the most-reviewed kart tour in the city, the only listed route over Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower lit at night, historic Asakusa and the Skytree or the billboards of Akihabara — and then pick the length and the hour that suit your day.

If You Visit Both Cities

If both cities are on your trip, drive in Tokyo first, where you can choose the landmark and the hour, and treat Osaka as a second, shorter drive through Dotonbori if you enjoyed the first. The paperwork is the same in both, and an IDP lets you drive in Japan for up to one year from your date of entry, so one booklet covers both cities.

What does not carry over is the booking: each tour has its own cancellation window: 7 days on three Street Kart listings (Shibuya, Akihabara, Tokyo Bay), 24 hours on the Shibuya Annex and most others.

Before either city
  1. 1Get the 1949 IDP booklet at home — it cannot be issued once you are in Japan.
  2. 2Pick the landmark: Shibuya Crossing, Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower or Dotonbori.
  3. 3Check the real price on your date and the free-cancellation window.
  4. 4Bring three originals to the counter: license, passport and IDP.

Tokyo vs Osaka Go Kart FAQ

Go karting in Tokyo if you want the widest choice: 24 street tours on GetYourGuide across five zones, with Shibuya Crossing, Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower. Choose Osaka if that is where you are staying and you want Dotonbori and Namba; Street Kart’s Osaka tour covers them in a 1-hour drive. The documents and the minimum age are the same.

Yes, the Osaka street tours we checked ask for the same documents as Tokyo: your home driving license, your passport, and a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP in booklet form. Drivers with licenses from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco or Taiwan need an official JAF translation instead. The IDP must be issued at home by the country that issued your license; it cannot be obtained after you arrive.

No, not on the street: the Street Kart Osaka listings on GetYourGuide and Viator set a minimum age of 18, as the Tokyo street listings that state an age mostly do. In Tokyo the only kart option for younger drivers is a closed-circuit racing day near the city, from age 6, with a junior kart option. It needs no road license, but it is a full day at a track rather than a city tour.

Street Kart’s Osaka tour is sold as a 1-hour drive, and its listings give 1 to 1.5 hours in total. Other Osaka operators sell 90-minute options: Akiba Kart’s Nipponbashi shop on Klook and JAPANKART’s Osaka Castle tour on its own site. In Tokyo most tours last 1 hour, with longer options of 2 hours on the bay flagship and 2–3 hours on the Shibuya / Shinjuku route.

Yes, Street Kart’s Osaka tour passes Dotonbori, along with America-Mura, Shinsaibashi and Namba, according to its GetYourGuide and Viator listings. Akiba Kart’s Nipponbashi shop also lists Namba and Dotonbori on its Klook page. Some Osaka packages add Osaka Castle, so read the route of the exact option you book. Street Kart’s Osaka listing allows free cancellation up to 7 days before.

We can’t confirm that, because we took a dated price snapshot only for Tokyo. In Tokyo, an hour with reviews starts at ¥9,000 and several tours start at ¥10,000; the most-reviewed one cost ¥18,500 on 15 October 2026. In Osaka, JAPANKART lists a 90-minute Osaka Castle tour at ¥10,000 on its own site. Compare the yen price on your date before you book either city.
